Heartless by Marissa Meyer (Non Spoiler Review)

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland and a favorite of the unmarried King, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, she wants to open a shop and create delectable pastries. But for her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for a woman who could be a queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the King’s marriage proposal, she meets handsome and mysterious Jest. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into a secret courtship.

Cath is determined to choose her own destiny. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

Photo Jul 28, 8 21 56 PM.jpgI am completely and wholeheartedly in love with this book. Marissa Meyer’s version of Wonderland grabbed me even quicker than Tim Burton’s. I spent about a week reading this book and in just that short time I grew to love the old and new characters in this story. I actually continued to forget that this was a villain origin story because of how lovable and hopeful everything was. Many times I found my heart just splintering when I remembered the inevitable fate of Catherine, The Queen of Tarts. Honestly, I haven’t had this much love for characters since I finished A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas and that’s saying a lot because that book was pure gold.

In this story we meet some of our old favorite characters before Alice ever steps foot in Wonderland. We get to watch Hatters race with time, and Cheshire’s inner Gossip Queen. We also meet two new characters, Catherine is the best baker in Wonderland and anyone who has tasted her treats knows it, Jest is the Court Joker with a mission that seems a bit compromised. We follow these characters through their journey of (how ever cliche it may sound) love, loss, and revenge. All the characters in this story I had unknowingly grown attached to which ultimately ruined my heart.

I loved Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles which I fell in love with a couple years back and after hearing of her recreating one of my favorite stories, how couldn’t my expectations be sky high? I will say all of them were met and I curse myself for not reading it sooner, I say that you are completely missing out. Marissa’s take on the Wonderland story would make even Lewis Carroll proud.

“Stuff and nonsense. Nonsense and stuff and much of a muchness and nonsense all over again. We are all mad here, don’t you know?”

“But hoping,” he said, “is how the impossible can be possible after all.”

“Perhaps we know each other in the future and you’re only remembering backward.”

Pre-Release Thoughts: Heartless by Marissa Meyer

We all loved the Lunar Chronicles and now Marissa Meyer is here with a new book all its own. There are tons of Alice in Wonderland retellings in the Young Adult genre but no one is apposed to more? I personally love Marissa Meyers writing style and worlds. That mixed with one of the best classics of all time is set for greatness. I’ve met this author twice over the past year and she is just the sweetest thing ever! And I am always excited for new work by one of my favorite authors. Continue reading

The Lunar Chronicles Book Tag

Hi!  So I was looking around for a good book tag to do since I’m now revamping my blog again (aka I forgot I had a blod for a while) and I found this which is perfect because the final book in The Lunar Chronicles, Winter was released this month.  I couldn’t find the original source of this tag but I’ll be going off of the questions from TheBooksBuzz’s video on YouTube (Also she has an amazing Instagram @thebooksbuzz also).

Queen Levana:  Who is your favorite antagonist/villain?

10194157  14061955  14061957

I’m going to have to say The Darkling from The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo because he’s just so sexy and mysterious and you just can’t help but love him.

Wolf:  Choose a character who likes to fight.

16034235  17167166  20613470  18006496

I think I’ll go with Chaol Westfall from the Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas for this one because he is always standing up for his friends and is of course one of my top book boyfriends.

Prince Kai:  A Charming Character.

George Weasley.  I mean he is my top, TOP fictional boyfriend so I have to.

Cyborgs:  A book that discusses alienation.

So Extraordinary Means by Robyn Schneider shows how these teenagers that are struggling with a severe sickness, are shut off from the world and quarantined in a forest.  Also, this book is an amazing story and you definitely need to check it out.

The Plague:  Find a book whose hype was spread like a disease.

The book that immediately comes to mind is Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.  This book was SOOO hyped up before it came up it felt that if I didn’t get it then I was a failure in the bookish community.  But I’m not complaining because it was an excellent book.

Winter is Coming:  A book that you are highly anticipating.

Well since Winter is already out, and most of my highly anticipated books have already came out, I’m going to choose Heartless by Marissa Meyer because Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite classic stories ever and these kind of retellings are my favorite.

Well thank you for reading through this tag and I promise to be more active on this blog from now on (hopefully).  I have a few ideas of what to do but if you have any suggestions please leave them down below.  I’ve also made the decision to do all of my future reviews on my Instagram page (@weasleyswizardreads) because it’s easier for me to write them there.

Anyway, thank you for being here and I hope to post again soon!!
